Explosion Protection and Prevention
in Bucket Elevators

Bucket elevators are used for the vertical transport of bulk solids, but their design and maintenance require special attention due to the high risk of explosion. The combination of a closed structure, combustible dust suspension, and continuous movement of components creates conditions conducive to the formation of explosive atmospheres and the emergence of ignition sources.

At Adix, we apply ignition source monitoring systems, along with explosion venting, active suppression, and isolation solutions, which reduce the likelihood of ignition and prevent the spread of explosions to other connected equipment.

Why can it be given
an explosion in an Elevator?

During the transport of the product, fine particles are generated and suspended inside the elevator, mixing with the air and creating a potentially explosive atmosphere. In addition to this, there are frequent sources of ignition such as friction between mechanical components, overheating of shafts or bearings, electrostatic discharges or the entrainment of sparks from connected equipment.

Once initiated, the explosion can spread rapidly through ductwork, affecting silos, filters, or other in-line equipment.

Main risks
in Bucket Elevators:

  • Accumulation of combustible dust in the elevator housing
  • Friction ignition, mechanical failure, or external sources
  • Explosion propagation into silos, filters, or mills
  • Unplanned stops.
  • Risk to the safety of personnel.

ADIX Solutions for Bucket Elevators

We apply a combination of prevention, protection and isolation measures, adapted to the operating conditions of each plant and in accordance with ATEX regulations (2014/34/EU), 1999/92/EC and international standards such as NFPA 68 and NFPA 69.

Explosion Venting

Domed or flat panels to release overpressure safely.

Flameless Venting

Ideal for indoor spaces, avoids projections and secondary flame.

Active Suppression

Pressure or infrared sensors that activate an extinguishing agent that extinguish the deflagration in milliseconds.

Preventive monitoring

Ideal for indoor spaces, avoids projections and secondary flame.

Isolation

Flap valves or chemical barriers that prevent spread to other equipment.
